Initiative, Adaptability & Rapid Learning
Strategically, set the stage for the victory; tactically, outsmart the opponent of the victory.

The Core Idea

Manoeuvre warfare emphasises initiative, agility and the ability to shape situations rather than merely react to them. The OODA loop (Observe–Orient–Decide–Act) provides a framework for making decisions in rapidly changing and uncertain environments. Together, they highlight the importance of understanding the situation, acting purposefully and adapting faster than circumstances change.

How it shapes my approach

My military experience and professional studies have reinforced the importance of combining situational awareness, sound judgement, decentralised initiative and timely action. I have applied these principles while developing strategies that required organisations and people to adapt to complex security and social challenges.

Application to strategy

I believe that organisations must continuously observe their environment, challenge assumptions, make informed decisions, act with initiative and learn from outcomes. When applied to social change, this approach can help leaders respond to emerging challenges, mobilise stakeholders and adjust interventions without losing sight of the larger mission. When I commanded 18 Rashtriya Rifles in Lolab, North Kashmir (2006–08), we used manoeuvre at the strategic and tactical levels to isolate the terrorists from the people, neutralise them with the least force and win peace for Lolab.

The Guiding Principle

Observe deeply, understand correctly, decide wisely, act decisively and learn continuously.
