Value-Based Leadership for Peace, Profit and Seva
Your organisation has rules, targets and training, but people still do the minimum. Under pressure, trust breaks, and the values on the wall are not the ones people live by.
Ram Tattva: Siachen Glacier, 1998–99, and Dal Lake, 2021–22. I volunteered for the highest, most exposed complex on the Central Glacier, and all 800 soldiers of my unit came home. At Dal, I helped revive lost hope & lives and reverse a decision to move Shiite families from their homes to a low-lying site 20 km away.
Shivaji Maharaj’s example: Assam-Manipur, 2015–16, and NCC Delhi, 2023–25. Every command began with one line of vision and one value. “All Tribes, One India” united 13 tribes and 6 non-tribes. “Once a Cadet, Always a Cadet” gave 36,000 cadets a shared identity.
Swami Vivekananda’s call to build strength: Srinagar and Kangundi. At Army Public School, Srinagar, where 40% of the students are Kashmiri, every student and staff member learnt the national anthem, and the school won first prize in a national anthem competition in 2025. In Kangundi, rural youth took up climbing, and the first festival drew 100 athletes.
In print since 1993, in the Army’s Infantry Journal, and in my book Lage Raho Leadership.
People hold when the pressure is on. Soldiers volunteered for the hardest post, and cadets wanted to win for their own directorate.
Trust comes from people who had none to give. Tribal elders, villagers, and Kashmiri veterans and young people gave it to me, once they saw their own values respected.
Values show up in numbers a board can count. Lives saved, a national rank earned inside an existing budget, and jobs and village income created.
Universities, business schools and management institutes. Boards and CXOs building a culture. Trusts and temple boards. Government training academies, professional bodies and large NGOs.
