Geopolitical Advisory & Narrative Strategy : Pakistan, Kashmir and the Northeast Bharat
Your rival’s story keeps winning over your own audience. And you keep being surprised by their next move.
Pakistan, 2017–19. I spent two years in Islamabad as Defence and Military Advisor. After the Pulwama attack, I briefed Army Chief General Bipin Rawat and Director General of Military Operations on 21/22 February 2019, four days before the Balakot air strike. On 5th May 2019, Prime Minister Modi confirmed that Pakistan had massed its forces on the Line of Control, expecting a ground response. In a Tri-Service Seminar on Narrative Warfare in Operation SINDOOR on 26th August 2025, I said that Pahalgam was the same kind of trap and I this was widely reported by print media.
Assam-Manipur, 2015–16. Tribal elders themselves banned illegal extortion, a people’s movement a Lieutenant General Bipin Rawat had been trying to start elsewhere with some success. In 2023, seven years after I left, the government withdrew the Armed Forces Special Powers Act from Dima Hasao, 34-years after it has been applied.
Kashmir, 2020–22. Kashmiris themselves raised the Tricolour on the Lal Chowk Clock Tower and conducted candlelight protests against killing of civilians by Pakistani terrorists spread across the Valley. In 2022, J&K recorded 1.88 crore tourists, a record.
You get warning you can act on. My Pulwama assessment reached the Army Chief at a ministerial dinner. He gave me fifteen seconds and asked me to meet him in Delhi the next day. India struck by air.
The story moves because your people carry it. Tribals elders, not soldiers, ended the extortion in Assam. Kashmiris, not the Army, installed the Tricolour at Lal Chowk, Srinagar on 26 January 2022 and on 15 August 2022.
The gains outlast the campaign. Years after I left, the Lal Chowk Tricolour, the public singing of National Anthem and the Dal Floating Village still run on their own.
